It is necessary for accessible parking spaces to be clearly identified using appropriate signage and markings. This must incorporate the International Symbol of Accessibility. Access aisles must also be clearly marked to discourage parking in them. The requirements also state that an accessible route adjoins each parking space and connects to accessible entrances in the building. ADA parking spaces should be located to allow the shortest possible accessible route to the entrance of the building and individuals should not need to cross over vehicular lanes or behind parked vehicles to reach an accessible entrance.
The 2010 ADA Standards require businesses to have at least one parking spot that is designed to be accessible. The exact number of spaces required will vary depending on the overall capacity of the accessible parking.
